The NAACP Los Angeles was founded in the living room of Dr. John Sommerville and Dr. Vada Somerville in 1914. In 1949 Dr. John Somerville was appointed to the Los Angeles Police Commission. Dr. John Somerville served as president of the NAACP Los Angeles for 10 years. Here is a powerful article on Dr. John Somerville. It is written by Sarah Lifton, a Los Angeles-based writer who specializes in history, architecture and education.
The NAACP Los Angeles Executive Committee consists of elected officers, at large members and appointed committee chairs dedicated to social justice and eliminating disparities that affect communities of color in Los Angeles.
