NAACP Los Angeles — Legal Redress & Complaint Process
The Legal Redress Committee reviews and investigates reported incidents of discrimination, assists individuals seeking relief from discriminatory acts, and serves as a liaison between complainants and organizations providing quality legal services in the Los Angeles community.

Deadlines matter. Civil rights claims are subject to strict filing deadlines, and filing with the NAACP does not stop them from running. Complaints should be filed with the Branch within 30 days of the act of discrimination so the informal ("pre-complaint") process can begin. Federal EEO complaints generally require contacting an EEO counselor within 45 days of the act.
Types of Complaints We Accept
- Employment discrimination — based on race, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, religion, disability, or veteran status; also retaliation, whistleblower, and wage and hour complaints
- Consumer fraud — predatory lending; excessive or hidden fees in leasing, credit card, mortgage, or insurance transactions; deceptive billing; false advertising; defective products
- Public accommodations — denial of service or improper treatment in restaurants, hotels, stores, and other businesses; racial profiling; housing discrimination
- Criminal justice — racial profiling, unlawful arrest, excessive or unreasonable use of force
- Education — discrimination or unequal treatment in schools
How to File a Complaint
- Submit a written complaint on the NAACP Complaint Form. Verbal complaints cannot be accepted. Include the who, what, when, and where, plus witnesses and copies (not originals) of supporting documents.
- The Committee reviews your complaint to determine whether the Branch can support your claim, and may contact you for additional information.
- Resolution or referral. Where possible, the Committee works to resolve the matter directly. The decision to accept a referred case rests solely with the attorney or firm.
- You will be notified of the Committee's conclusions when the review is complete.
The Committee aims to respond to every complaint in a timely manner, but please anticipate some delay. Complaint data is also used to document patterns of discrimination and to support the NAACP's advocacy for police accountability, fair workplaces, and criminal justice reform.
